Management of Dental Patients Taking Anticoagulants or Antiplatelet Drugs

Published August 2015, currently under review.

The SDCEP Management of Dental Patients Taking Anticoagulants or Antiplatelet Drugs guidance was first published in 2015. In line with SDCEP’s standard five year guidance review period, the scheduled review of the guidance topic commenced in 2020.

Progress to June 2021

Scoping research has now been carried out to inform the review. Information on practitioners’ experience of using the guidance and treating relevant patient groups was gathered via interviews carried out by researchers working in the TRiaDS programme. Work is ongoing to gather patient views on their dental treatment and the patient information provided with the first edition of the guidance.

A multidisciplinary Guidance Development Group (GDG) comprising of members from a range of dental and medical professions and patient representatives has been convened to review and update the guidance, with assistance from the Programme Development Team. An online meeting of the GDG took place on 16 June 2021 to identify developments relating to the guidance topic, consider practitioner and patient feedback and agree the scope for the guidance update.

Updated evidence searches have been carried out by the Trials Search Co-ordinator of Cochrane Oral Health and the articles retrieved are being screened and appraised according to SDCEP’s Guidance Development Process. The GDG will meet again in September 2021 to consider evidence summaries, review the guidance content and agree updates to the guidance and supporting tools.

It is anticipated that the updated guidance will be published in December 2021.
