SDCEP has published the second edition of its Prevention and Management of Periodontal Diseases in Primary Care guidance.

The guidance aims to aims to assist and support the dental team to identify and manage patients at risk of and with periodontal diseases in primary care, improve the quality of decision making in treatment planning and improve the overall oral health of the population.

The second edition of the guidance brings together the latest advice on periodontal disease diagnosis and treatment within one resource. It is based on the most current evidence and has been updated using SDCEP’s NICE accredited methodology. While primarily aimed at the dental team, the guidance is also relevant to medical practitioners, given the systemic disease link.

The dental faculties of the Royal Colleges, and the College of General Dentistry have endorsed the guidance as a source of reliable, high quality professional advice that promotes the provision of safe and effective oral health care for patients.

For the first time, SDCEP is presenting this guidance within a dedicated website to aid accessibility, navigation and updating.  Tools to support the implementation of the guidance are also available, including patient information and advice specifically for medical practitioners. A downloadable pdf version of the guidance is provided. Patient information leaflets are also available.
