About this guidance

Prevention and Treatment of Periodontal Diseases in Primary Care aims to support the dental team in improving and maintaining the periodontal health of their patients. It provides clear and consistent practical evidence-based advice for the delivery of preventive care, including strategies to improve the oral hygiene of patients and for the treatment of periodontal diseases.

Guidance development

British Society of Periodontology

The guidance is based on a review of available evidence and the opinion of experts and experienced practitioners and has been subject to open consultation and peer review prior to finalising for publication.

The Guidance Development Group for this guidance included representatives of the British Society of Periodontology (BSP). The inclusion of the BSP logo signifies the Society’s endorsement of the guidance as a source of reliable, high quality professional advice that promotes the provision of safe and effective oral health care for patients. Further information on the SDCEP guidance development process is available.

During the development process, potential barriers and facilitators for the implementation of this guidance were identified. A Guidance Implementation Summary (PDF) of information about these is provided. For further details visit the TRiaDS website.

NICE accredited

NICE has accredited the process used by the Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme to produce its Prevention and Treatment of Periodontal Diseases in Primary Care guidance. Guidance development group

A Guidance Development Group, consisting of individuals from a range of branches of the dental profession with an interest in the management of periodontal diseases and a patient representative, was convened to develop and write this draft guidance, assisted by our Programme Development Team.

SDCEP acknowledges the important contribution of all those who commented during the consultation and peer-review stages. Information about conflict of interests is available on request.

Review and updating

The SDCEP Prevention and Treatment of Periodontal Diseases in Primary Care guidance was first published in 2014. In line with SDCEP’s standard five year guidance review period, a scheduled review of the guidance topic commenced in 2019. In parallel, SDCEP have been working with Public Health England and Cochrane Oral Health to update the Delivering Better Oral Health toolkit, which includes a chapter on prevention of periodontal diseases.

The review process was paused in 2020 while SDCEP responded to the unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This work restarted in 2021 and SDCEP is focussing on aligning with the forthcoming Delivering Better Oral Health toolkit and and guidance from the British Society of Periodontology.
